ZDNet discusses the future of 3D aerial imaging technology and emerging trends with Nearmap CEO, Rob Newman
In an age where businesses have unprecedented access to data, aerial maps are at the forefront of allowing organizations to literally "see" a location without being there in person. ZDNet journalist, Asha McLean, interviewed Nearmap CEO, Rob Newman, about this emerging trend in her article entitled "Nearmap eyes 'reality-as-a-service' with 3D mapping technology".
In the article, Newman discusses Nearmap technologies queued for release later this year that give businesses access to 3D models of features on the ground. "We are starting to collect that content in both Australia and the US, and that will be available as a streamed subscription service to our customers. We're capturing the real world, and then allowing our customers to stream it to be presented in a variety of different forms such as textured mesh or 3D visualisations."
Nearmap already provides businesses with instant access to high-resolution, frequently updated, 2D aerial maps. In the US, Nearmap's aerial capture program surveys 70 of the country's largest cities up to three times per year, with 270 cities captured at least once a year. The uses for this type of visual data are continually growing as higher image resolution reveals greater levels of detail. Insurance companies use it for remote claim management; engineering companies monitor construction projects; solar companies qualify and quote solar leads; and local government agencies use it for property appraisal, infrastructure maintenance, and transportation services.
Other businesses use Nearmap to unlock new opportunities. Newman cites a seemingly unusual example, "One is Tasty Trucks, who drive the food vans around to construction sites so that the workers on site can buy lunch. Tasty trucks was identifying where construction sites were using our imagery to plan the route of their food trucks. Going into the third dimension and delivering reality as a service, we can't even think today about all of the applications that could bring, in the same way we would never have guessed the Tasty Trucks example."
