New imaging technology gives disaster management professionals faster access to high-resolution before-and-after aerial images of storm damage
In his article entitled "Imaging Technology Deployed Before and After Hurricanes", ENR associate editor, Jeff Rubensone, highlights how new advances in photogrammetry give disaster management professionals and assessors unprecendented access to visual data showing the impact of the recent hurricanes in Texas and Florida.
"The use of before-and-after data on storms is tried and true, but as data gathering grows more sophisticated, assessing the scale of the damage and pinpointing the areas and structures most in need of repair is accelerated. Nearmap’s approach is to gather as much aerial imagery of urban areas as possible in an ever-expanding library. This lets the firm provide relatively recent images of sites when requested, rather than having to arrange flyovers for every job."
In the case of hurricanes Harvey and Irma, Nearmap immediately deployed aircraft with its patented high-resolution sensors just a few days after the storm’s passage. The newly captured imagery was published within a few days, adding to its already extensive library of current imagery of US urban areas.
Nearmap's US coverage program, cloud-based delivery, and image quality differentiate it from other imagery providers. For example, while satellite maps cover the entire globe, resolution is low and updates are infrequent (i.e. typically every one to three years). Drones capture high resolution photos, but only for small defined areas or individual projects. Moreover, even with multiple drones deployed, the process of capturing, processing, and managing the imagery is often a costly, complex, and lengthy process. In contrast, Nearmap surveys urban areas across the US multiple times per year, rapidly processes sub-3" GSD ortho and oblique aerial imagery, and delivers it instantly through its web-based MapBrowser or integrated directly within GIS and CAD applications.
Nearmap brings the real world to you. We capture, manage and deliver the most current location content in the world, allowing businesses and governments to explore their environment easily. With Nearmap, organizations unlock opportunities that consistently inform decision-making and transform the way they work. Our high-resolution, frequently updated aerial imagery is 2.8-inch GSD, better than satellite imagery. Delivered within days of capture, Nearmap shows changes over time. Users save time and money, reduce site visits and efficiently plan with current, clear imagery.
Nearmap is delivered through a refreshingly easy-to-use interface called MapBrowser™ or accessed via Esri®, Autodesk, CAMA systems and other third party products.
